Low Season

The low season in Zanzibar generally starts at the end of March, and lasts until the end of May. During this time it tends to rain ever other day, but mostly during the night, however it is still a fantastic time to visit Zanzibar, and everything around is very vibrant and green during this period. A reason to consider staying during the low season is that hotels are generally cheaper, with some offering up to 20% off their usual rate.

High Season

The high season in Zanzibar is during December (mostly mid way through the month), when people have got time off from work and children are off school. To stay in your desired hotel in Zanzibar during this busy time, you will have to book at least 1 year in advance, otherwise you may struggle to find somewhere that suits you.

How many stars does this hotel have?

The hotels in Zanzibar do not have an official star rating, but you can see the difference between budget, comfortable and luxury by just looking at the places, whether it be online or in person.

Should I book my hotel in advance?

This question often crops up, and there are different answers depending on what you like to do and the time of year. During high season, you should always book in advance, and during low season you are more likely to get discounts by haggling for hotels in person when you are looking at accommodation options. I'd recommend that back packers who are staying in coastal areas turn up without a booking - there are plenty of cheap but basic hotels and guest houses which will suit your needs. However, if you do not want to spend your time in Zanzibar checking hotel after hotel, then do your research and online and book in advance - it may make you feel more comfortable and relaxed about your holiday!

Different types of accommodation

Town hotels - Based in or around Stone Town, these are often old Arabic style buildings which offer comfortable accommodation in the busier part of Zanzibar.
Beach hotels - These can vary massively, but you will find many have a bar/restaurant area with a mikuti roof, and then will have a hotel block or separate cottages close by to stay in.

Villas - If you have a large party of people, then you may consider renting a villa for your time in Zanzibar. These can often come to include waiters, chefs and cleaners within the package.

Backpacker guest houses - The cheap but cheerful accommodation, often a favoured option for young travellers on a budget.

If you are looking through Zanzibar hotels online and are a bit overwhelmed with the choices available,, then check out The Zanzibari boutique beach hotel based in Nungwi which is a beautiful beachside hotel with only a small number of rooms, an infinity swimming pool, spa, restaurant, and rooms with sea view balconies. They also often have special offers on, so check in advance!

Last, the weekend days are always more expensive than the weekdays and you need to know that if you travel from Monday to Thursday it will be significantly cheaper than if you go from Thursday to Monday. This is something to consider when you are traveling for business reasons. When you travel for pleasure it is harder to avoid the weekends, but know that a full 7 days stay will usually get you a break on the price.
